There are many different treatments or preservatives on the market today.
some are effective on some species of wood, while not effective on others. The way the
treatment is applied and the condition of the wood makes a big difference in how good the
wood will ultimately be treated. Pressurized treating is by far the most popular. Some
treatments are water-based and some oil-based. They each have particular advantages and
disadvantages. The most popular treatments for Doug Fir is ACZA and ACQ which are
water-based and Creosote and Penta which are oil-based.
There are lots of buzz words and phrases like ground contact and treated
to refusal used in the marketplace that lead you to believe that you are looking at
a quality treated product. Unfortunately, the unaware customer ends up paying in the end
with premature product failure and high replacement costs.
We deal only with wood treating companies that follow AWPA (American Wood Preservers
Association) guidelines to assure that our products are properly treated to the highest
standards. Only by meeting these guidelines are you guaranteed that you will get the
longest lasting wood available.
It may cost more for our product initially, however, when you look at the yearly cost
spread over the first 10 to 20 years (after most posts have failed) it pays to go with
Doug Fir. If you look at the cost over 40+ years (the usable lifespan) you will see that
your cost is considerably less.
